About Westbrook

What it's like to live here

Westbrook is a Middlesex County town of about 6,900 people that stretches four miles along Long Island Sound between Clinton and Old Saybrook and about five miles inland to Essex and Deep River. I-95 and Route 1 run through town, Shore Line East stops at Westbrook station just north of the village center, and the Amtrak station in Old Saybrook is about 10 minutes east. Downtown Middletown is about 35 minutes north.

Westbrook was first settled around 1648 as the Oyster River Quarter of Saybrook and was known as Pochoug, then West Saybrook. It became its own parish in 1724, took the name Westbrook in 1810 and incorporated in 1840. Local white oak and chestnut fed a shipbuilding trade for nearly a century, David Bushnell, inventor of the Turtle submarine, was born here, and by the 1870s the shore had become a summer resort, a character its beach neighborhoods still keep. Eleanor Roosevelt often visited the Esther Lape estate, now part of a national wildlife refuge.

Our Middletown office at 32 Washington Street is about 35 minutes north, and our headquarters is at 40 West High Street in East Hampton. Our agents live and sell here.
