About Salem

What it's like to live here

Salem is a New London County town of about 4,300 people between Colchester and the shoreline. Route 85 runs through the center toward New London, about 14 miles south, and Route 11 heads north toward Colchester and Route 2, putting Hartford about 45 minutes away. Most of the town is woods, farms and lakes, and Salem did not even have its own ZIP code until the mid-1990s.

This was Mohegan land, and the first English settlement was deeded in 1664. The area was called Paugwonk before it became New Salem Parish in 1725, named in honor of Colonel Samuel Browne of Salem, Massachusetts, and the town was incorporated in 1819 from parts of Colchester, Lyme and Montville. Stagecoaches ran on the Hartford and New London Turnpike, now Route 85, into the 1890s, and the Music Vale Seminary here, open from 1835 to 1876, was the first accredited music school in the United States.

Our Colchester office at 392 South Main Street is about 10 minutes north. Our agents live and sell here.
