About Norwich

What it's like to live here

Norwich is a city of about 40,000 people at the head of the Thames River, where the Yantic and Shetucket Rivers meet. I-395, Route 2 and Route 32 all pass through, so downtown New London is about 25 minutes south, Mohegan Sun is about 10 minutes away, and Hartford and Providence are each roughly 50 minutes to an hour. Neighborhoods range from the downtown harbor to old mill villages and quiet streets near the Sprague line.

Settlers from Saybrook led by Major John Mason founded Norwich in 1659 around what is now the Norwichtown Green, buying the land from the Mohegan sachem Uncas. Shipping moved the center to the Chelsea harbor by the early 1800s, and mills rose on the rivers, including the Ponemah Mill in Taftville. Benedict Arnold was born here, wealthy families built the mansions along Washington Street and Broadway, and the town and city consolidated in 1952. Norwich Public Utilities, owned by the city, still supplies electric, gas and water service.

Our Colchester office at 392 South Main Street is about 20 minutes west on Route 2, and our headquarters is at 40 West High Street in East Hampton. Our agents live and sell here.
