About Newington
What it's like to live here
Newington is a Hartford County town of about 31,600 people, about 8 miles south of downtown Hartford and bordered by Hartford, Wethersfield, Rocky Hill, Berlin, New Britain, Farmington and West Hartford. Route 9 and the Berlin Turnpike run through town and the CTfastrak busway stops at Newington Junction, so Hartford is about 15 minutes away and New Britain about 10. It is mostly residential, with the Turnpike carrying the shopping and dining.
Settlers from Wethersfield began farming this western land in the 1600s, and in 1721 the General Assembly approved the name Newington, 'the new town in the meadow.' It became its own town in 1871. The trolley arrived in 1894, and the old Hartford and New Haven Turnpike was renamed the Berlin Turnpike in 1942 as the town grew into a suburb. Newington is home to the American Radio Relay League and its W1AW station, and the Connecticut Department of Transportation is headquartered here.
Our Glastonbury office at 59 Sycamore Street is about 20 minutes east. Our agents live and sell here.
