About Montville
What it's like to live here
Montville is a town of about 18,000 people on the west bank of the Thames River, between New London and Norwich. I-395 and Route 32 run through town, so downtown New London is about 6 miles away and downtown Norwich about 8, and Hartford is just under an hour. Residents often identify with their village, Uncasville, Oakdale, Mohegan or Chesterfield, more than with the town as a whole.
The Mohegan sachem Uncas built his fortified village, now Fort Shantok, on a bluff above the Thames around 1636. Montville was the North Parish of New London until it became its own town in 1786, and the name means mountain village. John and Arthur Schofield opened an early woolen mill at the mouth of the Oxoboxo River in Uncasville. The Mohegan Tribe won federal recognition in 1994 and opened Mohegan Sun in 1996, and Town Hall now sits in the former Uncasville School.
Our Colchester office at 392 South Main Street is about 30 minutes northwest, and our headquarters is at 40 West High Street in East Hampton. Our agents live and sell here.
