About Middletown

What it's like to live here

Middletown is a Middlesex County city of about 48,400 people on the west bank of the Connecticut River. Route 9 runs right along downtown, I-91 passes through the Highland section, and downtown Hartford is about 17 miles, roughly 25 minutes, north. The city mixes a busy downtown with established neighborhoods, planned communities and quieter land toward Maromas and the Middlefield line.

English settlers founded the town in 1650 at the place called Mattabesett, and in the 1700s Middletown became the largest and most prosperous settlement in Connecticut, a working river port. The central city was incorporated in 1784, Wesleyan University opened in 1831, and the 1938 Arrigoni Bridge tied Middletown to Portland across the river. Today Middlesex Health is the city's largest employer, and Main Street's Federal through Art Deco storefronts are on the National Register.

Our Middletown office is right downtown at 32 Washington Street, and our East Hampton headquarters is about 9 miles east on Route 66. Our agents live and sell here.
