About Lyme

What it's like to live here

Lyme is a New London County town of about 2,400 people on the east bank of the Connecticut River, just north of Old Lyme. Route 156, a designated scenic road, winds through town, Old Lyme and I-95 are about 15 minutes south, and downtown New London is about 30 minutes away. Most of Lyme is woods, farms, coves and back roads, with the village of Hamburg as its center.

Lyme was set off from the Saybrook Colony in 1665 as East Saybrook and was recognized as the town of Lyme in 1667, named for Lyme Regis in England. East Lyme took its eastern section in 1823 and Old Lyme its shoreline in 1855. Connecticut governors Matthew and Roger Griswold were born here, the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry has crossed the river at Hadlyme since 1769, and the Lyme Land Conservation Trust keeps about 13 miles of trails open on its public preserves.
