About Essex

What it's like to live here

Essex is a Middlesex County town of about 6,800 people on the west bank of the Connecticut River, a few miles up from Long Island Sound. It is made up of three villages: Essex Village, Centerbrook and Ivoryton. Route 9 runs through town, so downtown Middletown is about 30 minutes north and the Amtrak and Shore Line East station in Old Saybrook is about 10 minutes south, while the village streets, coves and preserves keep a quiet, walkable feel.

Essex was known as Potapoug until 1852. During the Revolution, Captain Uriah Hayden built the Oliver Cromwell, the first ship built and financed by the Colony of Connecticut, at the foot of Main Street, and more than 600 vessels were launched here between the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. On April 8, 1814, British raiders rowed up the river and burned 28 vessels in the harbor. Later, Comstock, Cheney & Co. made Ivoryton a center of ivory and piano key manufacturing, and its worker homes and Victorian houses still stand.

Our Middletown office at 32 Washington Street is about 30 minutes up Route 9, and our headquarters is at 40 West High Street in East Hampton. Our agents live and sell here.
