About Deep River
What it's like to live here
Deep River is a Middlesex County town of about 4,400 people on the west bank of the Connecticut River, between Chester and Essex. Route 9 runs through town, putting Old Saybrook and I-95 about 15 minutes south and downtown Middletown about 25 minutes north. Most residents live in and around the village center on Main Street, with coves along the river and parcels of Cockaponset State Forest in town.
The town was part of Saybrook, and it was still named Saybrook until 1947, when it took the name of its main village. From about 1840 to 1940, most of the ivory bought in the United States went to Deep River, where Phineas Pratt developed an ivory lathe and the wealth earned the town the nickname Queen of the Valley. The Pratt, Read factory complex, Town Hall and the 1841 Stone House on Main Street recall that era, and every July the town hosts the Deep River Ancient Muster.
Our Middletown office at 32 Washington Street is about 25 minutes north on Route 9, and our headquarters is at 40 West High Street in East Hampton. Our agents live and sell here.
