About Chester
What it's like to live here
Chester is a Middlesex County town of about 3,700 people on the west bank of the Connecticut River, covering about 17 square miles. Route 9 runs through town, so downtown Middletown is about 25 minutes north and Old Saybrook and I-95 are about 15 minutes south, while Route 148 leads down to the river and the ferry. The village center is compact and walkable, surrounded by rolling hills, lakes and state forest.
Chester's roots go back to 1692, when Jonah Dibble settled in what was then the Pataconk section of Saybrook, and the town incorporated in 1836, named for Chester, England. It grew as a shipping and shipbuilding center, and the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry has crossed the river from its Chester landing since 1769. Today 19th-century storefronts line the curve of Main Street, Goodspeed's Norma Terris Theatre has developed new musicals here since 1984, and Whelen Engineering is headquartered in town.
Our Middletown office at 32 Washington Street is about 25 minutes north on Route 9, and our headquarters is at 40 West High Street in East Hampton. Our agents live and sell here.
